Start with sand under your feet, or move toward the lineup. Each path keeps the focus on safety, reading the Atlantic, and steady progression.
Inside
Level 1 is designed for first-time surfers and beginners. Sessions take place on the inside part of the wave with feet on sand, building confidence, technique and understanding of the ocean.
5 days minimum, 20 hours total, 1-2 sessions per day
Session 1-2
Equipment, safety and stance on sand. First assisted waves in the whitewater.
Session 3-4
Repetition of take-off, reading the set rhythm and learning when to start paddling.
Session 5-7
Catching your own waves, controlling speed and direction in the whitewater.
Session 8-10
Independent practice with coach feedback, choosing a safe spot and daily ocean check-in.
Outside
Level 2 is for surfers who already have a solid take-off in the whitewater and basic ocean knowledge. The focus shifts to paddling out, positioning in the lineup and cutting the green face of the wave with control.
3 days minimum, 12 hours total, 1-2 sessions per day
Session 1-2
Assessment of fundamentals, safety refresh and introduction to the outside sandbank.
Session 3-4
Efficient paddling patterns, timing sets and learning how and when to cross the impact zone.
Session 5-7
Positioning for the peak, committing to the drop and cutting the green with stable lines.
Session 8-10
Refining lines, linking sections and building a personal checklist for future sessions.

View all placesCoffee and brunch on Avenida do Mar, busy most of the day
A cafe-bar on the main Baleal strip: good espresso, bowls and toasts, vegan options, and a crowd that drifts from laptops in the morning to beers after the tide.
Local tipWorks before and after the session—light breakfast early, slower drink or occasional event night later.
Bakery, coffee, and Neapolitan pizza a few minutes from the sand
Newer Baleal spot: specialty coffee, in-house bakery, simple plates, and pizza when you want something more than a pastry after rinsing off.
Local tipQuiet mornings and takeaway coffee work well; pizza is an easy group option once everyone's off the beach.
Surf shop and coffee tucked behind Washed Up
Boards, clothing, coffee, cakes, and beers behind Washed Up on Avenida do Mar. Sometimes live music; always more shop than cafe.
Local tipHours can be loose—best as a browse-and-coffee stop before the beach or a low-key beer after.
